Swimmer killed by shark; East London beaches closed

A 65-year-old open-water swimmer died after a shark attack at Orient Beach, prompting the closure of popular local beaches.

Janine Lochrenberg, a retired nuclear radiographer and musician, was attacked during an early morning swim at Orient Beach on Tuesday. Fellow swimmers, including her son, attempted to rescue her and administered CPR, but she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has closed Orient Beach and adjacent Eastern Beach indefinitely and urged the public to stay out of the water while safety assessments are conducted.

Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, a police spokesperson, confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances of the death. Tributes have poured in for Lochrenberg, who was described as a cherished member of the East London open-water swimming community, known for her warmth and positive presence. The community expressed deep sadness, noting the significant void left by her loss.

The municipality has deployed emergency services and law enforcement to secure the coastline and is urging beachgoers to remain vigilant. Safety warnings have also been issued for other beaches in the area, with authorities advising the public to comply with all safety notices and avoid unnecessary risks. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
