Swimmer killed in shark attack at Orient Beach

A 65-year-old woman died after a shark attack while swimming at Orient Beach, leading to the closure of local beaches.

A fatal shark attack occurred at Orient Beach in KuGompo City on Tuesday morning, claiming the life of 65-year-old Janine Lochrenberg. Lochrenberg, a retired nuclear radiographer and musician, was open water swimming with a group when she was attacked. She sustained severe injuries to her right arm and leg and was declared dead at the scene by a medic from the swimming group. Police have opened an investigation into the incident.

Following the attack, Orient Beach and Eastern Beach were closed until further notice by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. Municipal spokesman Luzuko Buku confirmed the tragic loss of a swimmer. Fellow swimmer Mike Loewe, who was in the water at the time, recounted that members of their open-water swimming group responded to Lochrenberg's distress signal and brought her ashore. Loewe described Lochrenberg as courageous and someone who liked to swim solo.

Tributes have poured in for Lochrenberg from across South Africa and her swimming community. East London Open Water Swimming described her as a treasured member whose loss leaves an enormous hole in their ocean family. They remembered her as someone who quietly did what she loved most, finding joy in the ocean, and being a vital part of the heart of their group.
