Head teacher appeals for more classrooms and teacher housing due to increased attendance following the implementation of free education.
Chikosa Primary School in Mporokoso is experiencing a critical shortage of classroom space as a direct result of the government's free education policy. Head teacher Yolanda Chirwa stated that the policy has successfully encouraged former dropouts to return to school, creating a positive but challenging surge in pupil numbers. This influx necessitates immediate expansion of school facilities to accommodate the growing student body.
In addition to the urgent need for more classrooms, Ms. Chirwa also highlighted a pressing requirement for additional teacher housing. The Chikosa Parents Teachers Committee Chairperson, Kasanda Muswewa, acknowledged the government's efforts in improving learner comfort, but the school's infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with the increased enrollment.
The free education law has provided a second chance for many children to access schooling, a development welcomed by the school community. However, the success of this initiative has outstripped the school's current capacity, underscoring the need for investment in both educational and residential facilities to support the expanded student and staff population.
Why it mattersFarmers are affected because increased enrollment at Chikosa Primary School may divert resources and attention from agricultural education programs.
