Zambia government to pay K14.7 billion to maize farmers

Treasury releases funds to settle outstanding payments for maize and rice delivered to the Food Reserve Agency.

The Zambian government will progressively pay farmers who supplied maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), with K14.7 billion released by the Treasury for outstanding payments. Acting Minister of Agriculture Situmbeko Musokotwane assured Parliament that this funding is sufficient to cover debts for maize and rice delivered to the agency. The FRA purchased 2.7 million tonnes of maize and 1,304.41 tonnes of rice, totaling approximately K18.7 billion, with K4.1 billion already paid.

Dr. Musokotwane stated that the FRA has an outstanding balance of about K14.6 billion to farmers. The agency's current maize purchases bring the total FRA stock to 4.1 million metric tons, including carry-over from previous seasons. Government remains committed to settling all payments as funds become available and appreciates farmers' patience.

To manage stock and generate revenue, the FRA is seeking regional markets for its surplus maize, having secured sales contracts for 1.7 million metric tons for export and domestic markets. Revenue from these sales will support the national strategic food reserve and future procurement. Zambia's food security is assured until the next harvest, with sufficient maize stocks.
