COMESA to discuss weapons flow fuelling African conflicts

Member states will broaden discussions beyond trade to address peace, security, and the proliferation of arms.

Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) member states are expected to broaden discussions beyond trade and economic integration. The agenda will now include addressing peace, security, and the proliferation of weapons fuelling African conflicts.

Speaking at the 19th Comesa Business Forum in Harare, Majuru highlighted the bloc’s rich mineral and agricultural resources. He stated that these resources, coupled with a large consumer market, offer significant opportunities to expand regional trade and strengthen industries.

The shift in focus indicates a growing recognition within COMESA that economic progress is intrinsically linked to regional stability and the absence of armed conflict.

Why it mattersCOMESA member states are affected by the proliferation of weapons that fuel African conflicts.
