MPLA committee nullifies Higino Carneiro's leadership bid
The ruling party's Central Committee declared the candidacy void due to alleged document falsification.
The MPLA's Central Committee declared Higino Carneiro's candidacy for party president null and void on Wednesday. The decision followed accusations that Carneiro, a former governor and retired general, falsified documents.
Jurist Rui Verde stated that Carneiro could appeal to the Constitutional Court to potentially overturn the decision and order a repeat of the process. The MPLA's Central Committee also decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Carneiro for violating ethical and moral duties.
The party will communicate the facts to the Attorney General's Office due to strong indications of document forgery by Francisco Higino Lopes Carneiro. President João Lourenço issued superior orders for these actions.
