Benin lawmakers to review new road code

The proposed legislation includes legal alcohol limits, child restraints, and stricter penalties for hit-and-runs.

Benin’s parliament will examine a new road traffic code during its ordinary session, which began on October 21, 2026. The proposed law aims to modernize regulations dating back to 1956 and adapt them to current traffic conditions and accident reduction goals. Lawmakers attended a preparatory seminar in Grand-Popo on October 20 to discuss the draft with government officials and road safety experts.

Key measures in the draft code include establishing a legal blood alcohol content limit, cracking down on driving under the influence of narcotics, and addressing excessive speeding. The legislation also proposes child restraint systems, road safety education in schools, and tougher sanctions for drivers who flee accident scenes or refuse to comply with authorities.

The reform package, presented by transport sector officials, will undergo a commission review before a plenary session debate. The proposed changes are part of an effort to update the country's traffic laws and improve road safety.
