Botswana to host regional trading for Dangote refinery IPO

The Botswana Stock Exchange will act as a regional hub for investors seeking access to the US$1.6 billion refinery share offering.

The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) will serve as the regional trading hub for the US$1.6 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery initial public offering (IPO). This arrangement, coordinated by the Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges (CoSSE), aims to simplify investor access to the Nigerian refinery's shares.

CoSSE chairman Collen Tapfumaneyi announced last Wednesday in Gaborone that regional exchanges will concentrate trading through Botswana, allowing investors to use domestic brokers. Access Bank Botswana will issue Botswana Depository Receipts, each representing one Dangote Refinery share, facilitating an offering of up to US$500 million with trading expected to start on 14 December 2026.

This move follows a Reuters investigation highlighting regulatory hurdles and restricted distribution channels for foreign investors in the original Nigerian IPO prospectus. Concentrating trading via Botswana could improve liquidity and retain local brokerage activity, although participating markets must still meet their own regulatory requirements.

Why it mattersBotswana's financial sector is facilitating regional access to a significant international investment opportunity.
