Journalist wins diamond at Botswana independence event
Veteran correspondent Joy Chikura received a diamond from Debswana at a national business conference dinner.
Duma FM news correspondent Joy Chikura won a diamond in a lucky draw at the Debswana-sponsored National Business Conference dinner last Monday. The mining giant awarded the gem to celebrate Botswana's 60-year Independence Anniversary. Chikura, who is from Zimbabwe, had never seen a diamond until this win.
Chikura, a veteran journalist, was assigned to cover the event when she was selected in the draw. Debswana Managing Director Andrew Maatla Motsumi was present. Chikura stated it was an honor and dedicated the diamond to journalists who inform the nation.
She has chosen to keep the diamond's value undisclosed. Chikura previously named her daughter Ruby, a name meaning red gemstone, and finds the win a happy coincidence. She mentioned it is the first time in many years Debswana has given out a diamond.
