Sowore, police give conflicting accounts of Ekiti restaurant incident

Presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore claims a violent attack, while police report a minor altercation and injury.

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), and the Ekiti State Police Command have conflicting accounts of an event at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti on Friday. Sowore stated he and his team were violently attacked, but police described it as an altercation where the activist sustained a minor injury. The police command deployed operatives after receiving an alert about Sowore having issues with individuals at the restaurant.

Police Public Relations Officer Sunday Abutu said operatives rescued Sowore and took him for treatment at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti. However, Sowore rejected the police description, calling it an attack and accusing the Ekiti State Police Command and the Department of State Services (DSS) of suppressing evidence. He alleged security operatives seized CCTV footage from the restaurant and that DSS operatives had been harassing him since his arrival in the state.

Sowore claimed some attackers came from the Ekiti State Government House with support from DSS operatives, and the incident occurred after an interview at MIDAS FM 90.5. The police denied reports of Sowore being kidnapped, stating he was rescued after an altercation and is receiving medical attention for a minor injury.
