DR Congo families urged to rebuild state values

Professor Dezzy Mukebayi calls for civic and moral values to be taught within families to strengthen the nation.

The reconstruction of the Congolese state must begin within families, stated Professor Dezzy Mukebayi, dean of the Faculty of Law at the Official University of Mbuji-Mayi. He spoke at the 6th interdisciplinary colloquium in Ngandajika, Lomami province, urging parents to transmit civic and moral values to their children. Mukebayi highlighted that Congolese families are weakened by socio-economic crises and insecurity, hindering their ability to teach respect, responsibility, integrity, sharing, and solidarity.

Professor Mukebayi described the family as the primary space where children learn societal rules and civic values, calling it a political and civic space. He encouraged parents to set good examples and appealed to public authorities to better support families in their educational mission. Nancy Ngalula, founder of the NGO ADAAYE, added that restoring cultural and moral values is essential for national identity, noting the urgency to rehabilitate dignity and social cohesion due to observed violence within families.

The colloquium focused on the family as a pillar for rebuilding the Congolese state. Professor Mukebayi's call for state support for families' educational roles and Ngalula's emphasis on restoring cultural values aim to address the societal challenges affecting the nation's foundation.

Why it mattersThe citizens of DR Congo are affected by the call to rebuild state values through family education, which is essential for national reconstruction.
