DR Congo finishes Kasai river navigation markers
Navigation markers are now complete along 605 kilometers of the Kasai River, improving safety for transport.
Work to install navigation markers on a 605-kilometer stretch of the Kasai River between Kwamouth and Ilebo is finished. Brinto Desami, hydrography manager for Grand Bandundu, announced the completion on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, stating the project aims to boost navigation safety and reduce river accidents.
The new markers will help boats navigate more easily and safely along this waterway. Desami urged river users to follow the markers' guidance to prevent incidents. He also stressed the need for regular maintenance due to constant changes in water levels and riverbeds that affect boat passage.
The Kasai River is a vital transport route in the DRC's west-central region, used daily for moving people and goods between provinces. The boat 'Kauka', used for the marking work, is currently docked at the ONATRA port in Bandundu-Ville.
