ebola closes two health centers in lubero

two new cases among quarantined health workers prolong closure of alimbongo facilities.

Two health facilities in Alimbongo, Lubero territory, North-Kivu, remain shut after Ebola cases were confirmed among their staff. The Kitsombiro and Kasingiri health centers have had their agents in quarantine since October 3, with the closure extended after two new Ebola cases were confirmed among these quarantined health workers.

Over 50 health providers had contact with the initial nine Ebola cases in Kitsombiro and Kasingiri. Colonel Kiwewa Mitela Alain, overseeing the territorial response, cited community resistance, lack of logistics and finances, and occupation of part of the area by ex-AFC/M23 as obstacles to Ebola operations.

As of October 22, Alimbongo health zone recorded 19 Ebola cases, including 14 deaths. The arrival of the World Health Organization and International Medical Corps offers hope, with an Ebola treatment center under construction and staff capacities being strengthened.
