Central African Republic seeks Russian investment in key sectors

President Touadéra urged Russian partners to invest in agriculture, mining, energy, and forestry for local resource transformation.

Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadéra called for Russian investment in the nation's mines, energy, and agriculture sectors. Speaking at the third Russia-Africa Summit, Touadéra emphasized transforming raw materials locally to create jobs and added value within the country. He outlined four key expectations: local resource processing, technology and skills transfer, transparent investment contracts, and market access for processed agricultural goods.

Touadéra specifically highlighted agriculture and agro-industry, noting the country's fertile land and favorable climate could make it a regional breadbasket. He requested mechanization, fertilizers, seeds, and processing units. The president also pointed to the country's mineral wealth, including gold, diamonds, and uranium, advocating for responsible exploitation. Forestry and energy, particularly hydroelectric and solar power, were also presented as areas open for partnership.

The president's address aimed to shift from a model where raw materials leave Africa unprocessed. He stressed that cooperation should sustainably benefit both parties, with Africa retaining value addition and employment. Touadéra's proposals come as regional tensions rise, with the Central African Republic positioning troops along its border with Chad following accusations between Niger and Chad.

Why it mattersPresident Touadéra wants Russian investment to boost the Central African Republic's economy through local processing of resources and job creation.
