Congo assembly president seeks constitutional change for president

Isidore Mvouba stated Denis Sassou Nguesso is the man for today, tomorrow, and beyond 2031.

Isidore Mvouba, President of the National Assembly of Congo-Brazzaville, called for constitutional reforms to allow President Denis Sassou Nguesso to remain in power beyond 2031. Mvouba stated on October 17, 2026, that Nguesso is the man for today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and that constitutional changes are necessary to achieve this goal.

Mvouba's statements come as the country faces economic hardship, including shortages of water, electricity, and fuel, and arrears in salaries, scholarships, and pensions. The assembly president's call for constitutional change echoes past attempts that led to the imprisonment of Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko and André Okombi Salissa.

The current constitution, adopted in 2015, limits presidential terms. Mvouba's remarks suggest a push to alter this framework, despite the nation's pressing economic and social issues, which the executive leadership is expected to address.

Why it mattersThe President of the National Assembly is advocating for constitutional changes that could extend the presidential term, affecting the political future of the Republic of Congo.
