Tanzania warns of El Niño rains

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority forecasts normal to above-normal rainfall from October to January.

Tanzanians should prepare for El Niño-influenced rains expected from October 2026 to January 2027, according to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA). The TMA forecasts normal to above-normal rainfall, with increased rain likely in November and continuing into January. This warning urges sensible preparation rather than panic, as El Niño does not guarantee disaster for every district.

The TMA advises citizens to heed location-specific updates and local authorities’ advice, avoiding rumours and alarming social media messages. People in flood-prone areas, river valleys, and low-lying settlements are urged to follow official instructions to move to safer ground before rising waters impede evacuation. Families should plan evacuation routes, secure essential documents and medicines, and assist vulnerable individuals.

Authorities must enforce environmental rules, particularly against sand extraction from riverbeds, which can weaken banks and worsen flooding. Communities are encouraged to clear drains without dumping rubbish into waterways, while councils should inspect bridges and communicate warnings promptly. Farmers are advised to follow local forecasts and extension advice to protect stored produce and prepare for potential waterlogging.

Why it mattersTanzanians face potential flooding and need to prepare for heavy rains and their consequences.
