Congo football league expands to 18 clubs
The national championship will adopt a zonal format to manage club finances and operational costs.
The Congolese Football Federation (Fécofoot) will expand its top-tier national league from 14 to 18 clubs for the upcoming season. The competition will be organized in a zonal format, a decision driven by economic realities and the financial burdens faced by clubs. This change aims to adapt the championship's structure to the clubs' financial constraints.
Fécofoot president Éric Alain Mantot stated that the zonal format is an economic necessity to manage the costs associated with organizing the league. The federation also plans to enhance the management capabilities of sports structures through a training program supported by FIFA. This training, scheduled from November 16-18 in Brazzaville, will cover leadership, governance, financial management, and marketing for club officials.
Following the training, clubs will be eligible for an exceptional subsidy, contingent on signing an agreement that allows Fécofoot to monitor fund usage. Mantot clarified that Fécofoot's role is not direct club financing, encouraging clubs to seek sponsors and advertisers for additional resources. The federation's new direction focuses on rationalizing expenses and strengthening management to support the next football season.
