FBI shares data on Ivory Coast financial court corruption
Ivorian gendarmes arrested one person after receiving information from the FBI about a corruption network within the financial court.
Ivorian gendarmes are investigating corruption within the Economic and Financial Crimes Division (PPEF) of the Abidjan court, following information from the FBI. One person has been arrested as investigators uncovered a corruption network inside the specialized court. The FBI's involvement stems from American citizens being among the victims.
The PPEF handles sensitive cases including embezzlement, money laundering, large-scale fraud, and cybercrime. This investigation comes shortly after the PPEF issued a harsh sentence on October 22 in a sextortion case involving an American victim. The FBI was present in the courtroom during that sentencing.
The timing of this investigation is difficult for Ivorian authorities, as the country was recently removed from the Financial Action Task Force (GAFI) grey list. A new bill to create an Economic and Financial Penal Court of Appeal was also adopted on October 14.
Why it mattersThe corruption investigation within the financial court could undermine reforms aimed at combating financial crimes and maintaining international trust.
