Cameroon certifies 43% of registered bakeries
Cameroon's standards agency found 200 bakeries lack certification, raising food safety questions.
Cameroon's National Agency for Standards and Quality (ANOR) has certified only 150 of the 350 registered bakeries, a rate of about 43%. The agency identified 200 bakeries operating without the required certification.
Acting Director-General Chantal Andely disclosed these figures on October 26, 2026, in an interview with Cameroon Tribune. These findings apply to bakeries registered with ANOR, not all industry operators, and highlight challenges in meeting food-safety standards where bread prices are regulated.
The certification rate indicates progress in meeting formal quality requirements, though it does not confirm product safety. ANOR has not released data on the production share from certified sites or the number of uncertified operators seeking approval.
Why it mattersConsumers in Cameroon face potential exposure to products from uncertified bakeries.
