CEMAC and Interpol agree border security cooperation

Cameroon hosts talks where CEMAC and Interpol leaders discuss fighting cross-border crime and upgrading border posts.

The President of the CEMAC Commission, Baltasar Engonga Edjo'o, and Interpol President Lucas Philippe met in Yaoundé to strengthen cooperation against cross-border crime. The meeting, held during the 6th session of the Central African Police Chiefs Council, focused on enhancing border security and facilitating free movement within the CEMAC region.

Discussions included the strategic importance of free movement and the priority financing of infrastructure like juxtaposed border posts. Edjo'o specifically requested Interpol's support in equipping borders with biometric passport readers to balance fluidity with security, addressing concerns about trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime fueled by porous borders.

CEMAC requested Interpol's technical assistance, access to its databases, and capacity building for border police in its six member states. This cooperation aims to bolster security and ensure smoother intra-community exchanges.
