Chinese firm eyes $63.0M sugar, rice investment in Cameroon
Nanning Agricultural Development Group is considering large-scale plantations and a processing complex in Batouri.
Chinese state-owned company Nanning Agricultural Development Group is considering investing approximately CFA88 billion (US$63.03M) in sugar and rice production in Batouri, Cameroon’s East Region. The proposed project includes sugarcane and rice cultivation alongside a factory designed to produce 60,000 tonnes of sugar annually.
The investment remains at the feasibility assessment stage, with the company seeking a specialised consultancy to evaluate the project’s technical and financial viability. Bids for the feasibility study, for which Nanning has allocated up to CFA78 million (US$55.87M), are due by November 5, 2026.
This proposed investment revives plans for a sugar complex in Batouri, where previous initiatives by Justin Sugar Mills and Cosumar failed to reach implementation. Orient’s Sugar and Industry SA also explored developing a sugar complex in the East Region in October 2017.
Why it mattersCameroon's East Region may see agricultural development and job creation if the Chinese firm's investment proceeds.
