Cabo Verde ranks third in African governance index

The nation scored 70.3 points in the 2026 Ibrahim Index of African Governance, maintaining its position.

Cabo Verde maintained its third-place ranking in the 2026 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), scoring 70.3 out of 100 points. The index, published by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation on Saturday, October 31, assesses political and social trajectories across 54 African nations.

The IIAG 2026 report noted that overall governance in Africa saw a slight improvement between 2016 and 2025, driven primarily by economic opportunities and human development gains. However, progress was uneven, with security and the rule of law deteriorating across the continent.

While infrastructure, including mobile connectivity and internet access, showed significant growth, health and education also recorded improvements. Conversely, participation, rights, and inclusion saw setbacks in many countries, impacting a majority of the African population.

Why it mattersCabo Verde's governance performance is directly assessed in the Ibrahim Index, affecting its standing among African nations.
