MpD calls for justice reform results
The ruling party wants courts to deliver faster, more accessible justice for citizens, families, and businesses.
The Movement for Democracy (MpD) parliamentary group leader, Emanuel Barbosa, stated that Cape Verde needs to see concrete results from its justice sector reforms. He called for improved court operations, more staff, and quicker case processing. Barbosa made these remarks during parliamentary sessions preparing for October's second plenary meeting, where the MpD discussed the country's political situation and upcoming debates on transparency, governance, and the state of justice.
Barbosa acknowledged progress in recent legislatures but highlighted ongoing issues with accessing justice and resolving cases. "We know that justice delayed leaves people waiting and weakens trust in the state," he said, emphasizing that reforms must lead to tangible improvements for citizens, families, and businesses. He stressed the need for resources like infrastructure, personnel, and training to implement these reforms effectively.
The MpD leader also addressed equal treatment under the law, stating, "There can be no first-class or second-class Cape Verdeans in matters of justice." He insisted that judicial institutions must operate independently and without pressure. Barbosa questioned the timing of revisiting the state of justice, a topic previously raised by the opposition PAICV four times. He linked current public concerns to rising fuel prices in October, which have increased the cost of living for families, transporters, fishermen, and small businesses.
Why it mattersThe MpD party is pushing for reforms in the justice system to improve outcomes for citizens, families, and businesses.
