Egypt launches patient safety strategy for 2026-2030

The plan aims to reduce medical errors and improve healthcare standards across all levels of care.

Egypt has launched a national quality and patient safety strategy set to run from 2026 to 2030. Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar announced the initiative, which seeks to reduce medical errors and improve healthcare standards nationwide. The strategy also aims to establish systems for reporting adverse events and learning from them.

The strategy integrates quality standards from primary healthcare to intensive care, according to Abdel Ghaffar. A new medical liability and patient safety law has been introduced, alongside a dedicated patient safety department. A higher committee has been formed, uniting public, military, police, and private healthcare providers with civil society organisations.

Egypt's first patient safety report for 2025 will serve as a baseline for future performance. The ministry is also cooperating with the World Health Organization (WHO) on a professional diploma in patient safety, with 70 doctors already enrolled. The General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation (GAHAR) has accredited 964 facilities and registered over 122,000 professionals.

Why it mattersEgyptians receiving healthcare will benefit from improved standards and a reduction in medical errors.
