Egypt moves to raise fines for false news
The government is preparing amendments to the Penal Code to increase penalties for spreading false information online.
Egypt’s Cabinet announced on Wednesday, October 28, that it is preparing amendments to the Penal Code to increase fines for false news and rumour-related offences. This action is part of a larger government plan to regulate social media through new digital safety legislation, expanded technical monitoring, and public awareness campaigns.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly directed the formation of a working group to follow up on recommendations from a committee examining harmful social media practices. Justice Minister Mahmoud El-Sherif presented a report to the Cabinet on measures to safeguard Egyptian family values and social cohesion.
The committee also proposed establishing general rules for digital platforms through forthcoming digital safety legislation and stronger state oversight. The government has not yet specified the proposed fines or announced a timetable for introducing the amendments.
