Egypt raises $500 million from dollar bonds

The Finance Ministry sold additional bonds maturing in 2030 and 2033 to diversify funding.

Egypt raised USD 500 million on Tuesday by selling more bonds under two existing dollar issues, according to the Finance Ministry. The sale added USD 150 million to a bond maturing in 2030 and USD 350 million to one maturing in 2033. This reopening strategy allows the government to raise funds without creating new securities.

The Finance Ministry stated the sale is part of a plan to diversify funding tools and markets, attract new investor types, and extend the average maturity of Egypt's debt. The ministry noted the sale proceeded despite global economic challenges, geopolitical tensions, and increased uncertainty.

The ministry renewed its commitment to reducing external debt for state budget entities by USD 1 billion to USD 2 billion annually through greater repayment than borrowing abroad. In the last fiscal year, this debt was reduced by approximately USD 2.4 billion.

Why it mattersEgypt's government is raising funds through international debt markets to manage its finances and diversify borrowing.
