Egypt Spent LE31 Billion on Sports Facilities Amid Declining Participation

Minister boasts of infrastructure investment while official data shows fewer matches and teams in rural youth centers.

Sports Minister Gohar Nabil announced an investment of over LE31 billion in youth and sports facilities, including thousands of centers, stadiums, and pitches, during the Egypt Forum 2026. Nabil highlighted the creation of opportunities through these facilities across all 27 governorates and praised a national project for producing 577 athletes for national teams. However, this announcement contrasted sharply with data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

CAPMAS data revealed a significant decline in participation at village youth centers between 2013 and 2024. The number of matches played dropped by 85.5 percent, and sports teams decreased by 50.3 percent, despite a 6.7 percent rise in the number of centers. Player numbers in village centers also fell by 53.4 percent, reducing their share of total registered players from 82 percent to 63 percent.

The decline was also observed in city youth centers, though at a lesser rate, with matches falling by 50.8 percent. Despite the substantial investment and claims of opportunity, Egypt's Olympic medal count halved at the Paris 2024 games, with three medals compared to six in Tokyo 2020. The cost per medal in Paris exceeded LE333.3 million, a significant increase from Tokyo's LE37.1 million per medal.

Why it mattersInvestors are affected by the significant expenditure on sports infrastructure that has not translated into improved athletic performance or increased participation.
