Eni starts Egypt Western Desert gas project's second phase

The Meleiha project's expansion will boost gas processing capacity to 100 million standard cubic feet daily.

Italian energy firm Eni has initiated operations for the second phase of its Meleiha gas project in Egypt's Western Desert. This expansion, conducted through its joint venture Agiba Petroleum Company with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, establishes a new gas processing hub. The facility is designed to handle up to 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, significantly increasing the processing capacity for gas produced in the region.

The project's second phase incorporates an integrated infrastructure system, including new development wells, gathering networks, and transmission pipelines that connect to Egypt's existing gas grid. This integration aims to accelerate resource monetization and enhance operational efficiency. Eni, which has been active in Egypt since 1954 and is the country's largest energy producer, views this development as reinforcing its commitment to Egypt's energy security.

The expanded Meleiha project is expected to increase the availability of natural gas for the domestic market. Eni highlighted that the development adheres to high standards of operational excellence, safety, and environmental sustainability. The company's operations in Egypt span exploration, development, and production across multiple regions, including the Western Desert, Gulf of Suez, Nile Delta, and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Why it mattersThis project will increase the availability of natural gas for the domestic market.
