Suez Canal Authority seeks Greek maritime investment

Egypt's canal authority chairman met with Greece's ambassador to discuss trade and logistics cooperation.

Suez Canal Authority Chairman Ossama Rabiee met with Greece’s Ambassador Nikolaos Papageorgiou at SCA headquarters in Ismailia to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade and logistics investment. Rabiee invited Greek commercial enterprises to engage more actively with Egypt’s maritime corridor and cooperate with the SCA, highlighting the authority's developed industrial base and new maritime services.

Rabiee stated the Suez Canal has managed crises and safeguarded global supply chains by working with the maritime community. Papageorgiou praised the canal's progress as an ongoing success story and an indispensable artery of global trade, expressing hope for regional geopolitical stability. He noted steady shipping through the canal is vital for global supply chains.

The meeting aims to attract more investment in projects in the canal region, particularly for Greek shipowners who control one of the world's largest merchant fleets. SCA facilities could offer ship repair and dry-docking as alternatives to Greek and Turkish yards, while bunkering services could generate recurring revenue. Suez Canal revenue reached $567.1 million in August 2026, with 1,358 vessels transiting.

Why it mattersGreek shipowners, who control a large merchant fleet, are being invited to invest in Suez Canal facilities for ship repair and services.
