Ethiopia acquires Russian fighter jets

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's military purchases could transform air power amid Tigray fighting.

Ethiopia has acquired Russian fighter jets and air defence systems, according to reports on October 29, 2026. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's latest military purchases may transform the country's air power.

The acquisition of the warplanes comes amid ongoing fighting in the northern Tigray region that started last month. The Africa Report notes that the purchases raise questions over how the debt-strapped country is paying for them.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday in Moscow regarding cooperation in nuclear energy, health, and trade during the third Russia–Africa Summit.

Why it mattersEthiopia's military purchases and ongoing fighting in Tigray directly affect the country's security and its citizens.
