Absa Place earns IFC EDGE Advanced green building certification

The new Accra headquarters of Absa Bank Ghana Ltd achieved the certification for energy and water efficiency.

Absa Bank Ghana Ltd’s new headquarters, Absa Place, has earned EDGE Advanced certification from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The building, located at 64 Independence Avenue, Ridge, Accra, was recognised for its high standards in energy and water efficiency. The IFC’s EDGE Advanced system assesses improvements in energy use, water consumption, and the embodied carbon of construction materials.

The certification affirms the bank’s commitment to developing infrastructure that delivers long-term operational efficiency, according to Absa Bank Ghana Ltd Managing Director Dr Edward Nartey Botchway. IFC’s Principal Country Officer for Ghana, Deo Onyango, stated that the achievement demonstrates how sustainability can contribute to competitiveness and long-term value creation.

Absa Place features a 570-kilowatt-peak solar installation designed to meet at least 80 per cent of the bank’s on-site electricity needs. The building also uses a water-cooled chiller system and a glass façade that blocks over 70 per cent of external heat. In 2025, the bank operated 54 solar-powered ATMs generating approximately one million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually.
