Ghana to build 21,000-tonne grain storage facility
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture signed an MoU with DMT Collateral Management for the facility in Wa, Upper West Region.
Ghana will soon have a 21,000-metric-tonne grain storage facility in the Upper West Region following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and DMT Collateral Management. The project, scheduled for completion by August 2027, aims to reduce post-harvest losses and bolster national food security by constructing silos in Wa.
The facility will serve as a food security hub and an emergency reserve, described as a "hospital bin" for food supplies during crises, according to DMT Collateral Managing Director Paul Minlah. The project involves a €4.8 million export credit facility and an additional US$5 million investment, with DMT Collateral managing technical development and financing. Local capacity will be built through training for National Service personnel and Ghanaian technicians.
Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku stated the facility addresses inadequate storage infrastructure despite increased rice and maize production, which strains the National Food Buffer Stock Company's capacity. This Wa project is the first phase of a national expansion, with 15 to 20 similar facilities potentially planned across the country. Omanbapa AgriTech Limited also presented publicity materials for the upcoming 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebration.
Why it mattersGhanaian farmers will benefit from reduced post-harvest losses and improved storage for their rice and maize harvests.
