Cuban community in Gambia marks National Culture Day

Cuban nationals and Gambian professionals gathered in Banjul on October 20 to celebrate Cuba's National Culture Day. The event, held by the Cuban Embassy and the Cuban Medical Brigade, commemorated the birth of Cuba’s national anthem, La Bayamesa, which originated from a march written in 1868.

Ambassador Carmelina Ramírez Rodríguez stated that Cuban culture reflects the nation's history and resilience, fostering social cohesion. She highlighted that Cuban identity, or "Cubanidad," extends beyond birthplace and emphasized the anthem's historical call for independence from Spanish rule.

The celebrations also acknowledged the deep historical links between Cuba and Africa, stemming from the transatlantic slave trade. Rodríguez noted that African heritage significantly shaped Cuban identity, contributing to traditions and the spirit of resistance, and that culture remains vital for preserving freedom and sovereignty.
