Darboe vows to revive Gambia's agriculture and fisheries

The UDP leader plans to cut government waste to fund free fertiliser for farmers and review fishing deals.

UDP leader Ousainou Darboe has pledged to revitalise The Gambia's economy by focusing on agriculture and fisheries if elected president. Darboe outlined a plan to cut government waste, including abolishing advisory positions, to fund initiatives like providing free fertiliser to farmers. He also intends to review agreements with fishing companies to ensure they benefit Gambians and encourage local fish processing.

Darboe stated that rationalising expenditure would free resources for sectors directly impacting citizens, with agriculture being a top priority. He plans to substantially increase support for farmers to boost food production and reduce reliance on imports. Investments in modern storage facilities for women gardeners are also part of his agenda to prevent post-harvest losses.

The UDP leader aims to strengthen commercial agriculture and end heavy rice import reliance by collaborating with private enterprises. He recalled a time when The Gambia was more self-reliant and wants to create an enabling environment for farmers and agricultural businesses. Darboe also wants fishing companies to process their catches locally to create jobs and boost economic activity.

Why it mattersGambia's farmers and fishers will benefit from increased support and revised agreements aimed at boosting local production and employment.
