Guinea minister details electricity export revenue use

Mariama Ciré Sylla explained revenue from Kaléta and Souapiti dams goes to maintenance and regional energy sharing.

Guinea's Minister of Economy, Finance and Budget, Mariama Ciré Sylla, addressed questions on revenue from electricity sold to neighbouring countries. The sales are part of regional energy interconnection, with funds primarily used for maintaining the EDG power plants. She noted that while countries pay, some have arrears, and Guinea also faces payment delays.

Ibrahima Abé Sylla, a Guinean MP and former Energy Minister, discussed the financing of the Kaléta and Souapiti dams. He stated the Guinean state funded 40% of the Kaléta infrastructure, with the remaining one billion financed by a Chinese credit. For Souapiti, he explained Kaléta was used as collateral to fund its development.

The MP highlighted that Souapiti has a capacity of approximately 350 megawatts. He indicated that using Kaléta as collateral for Souapiti is a financial arrangement that continues to affect Guinea.

Why it mattersGuinean citizens are affected by how revenue from electricity exports is used for national infrastructure maintenance and regional energy partnerships.
