BEAC denies issuing new CFA franc banknotes

The Bank of Central African States confirmed that images of new banknotes circulating on social media are false.

The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) has denied issuing new 25 to 400 CFA franc banknotes, images of which have been circulating on social media. The institution stated on October 21 that the information was false, according to AhoraEG. The images displayed designs mimicking the security features and appearance of official banknotes.

This false information follows an agreement on October 7 by the Ministerial Committee of the Central African Monetary Union (UMAC) to withdraw old coins. This measure, effective November 1, affects coins issued between 1958 and 1985 across the six CEMAC countries. The BEAC clarified that the coin withdrawal does not involve the issuance of new banknotes.

AhoraEG advises the public to verify such information through official sources before sharing, due to an increase in manipulated images and falsified documents online. The withdrawal of old coins is a separate measure from any potential new banknote issuance.
