Kenya Red Cross trains staff after second Ebola death

Kenya has confirmed nine cases of Ebola, including two deaths, prompting emergency preparedness training.

Kenya has recorded its second death from Ebola, bringing the total confirmed cases to nine. The Kenya Red Cross has begun training its staff in Nairobi on safe handling and burial procedures for victims, as these are high-risk transmission periods.

Dr. Paul Olale, Head of public health emergencies at Kenya Red Cross, stated that his teams are being trained in safe and dignified burials to ensure readiness for any cases. The first victim, who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo, died in Nairobi on October 5. The health ministry traced 135 contacts of the first case, placing them in quarantine.

The second person to die was a 65-year-old woman, a close family member and direct contact of the initial patient, who died on Friday. The Red Cross's training focuses on preparedness for handling victims and their bodies to prevent further spread of the disease.

Why it mattersKenya's population is directly affected by the confirmation of two Ebola deaths and nine cases, necessitating public health emergency training.
