Sancho Kibutu, a fugitive for 13 years, was arrested in Nairobi on September 9 and handed over to US authorities.

Kenyan fugitive Sancho Kibutu was extradited from Nairobi to California on October 23, 2026, to face sentencing for a 2013 gross vehicular manslaughter conviction while intoxicated. The Director of Public Prosecutions confirmed Kibutu was handed over to US authorities by officers from the ODPP and Directorate of Criminal Investigations after being arrested in Nairobi on September 9, 2026.

Kibutu, who also went by aliases Sancho Kibuto and Njoroge Kibuto, had been a fugitive for 13 years after failing to appear for sentencing following his conviction in the USA on September 19, 2013. A bench warrant was issued on October 28, 2013, for the then 32-year-old who was driving along Golden State Boulevard when he crossed a double yellow line, colliding with another vehicle. The crash killed a 16-year-old passenger and injured three others.

The extradition process, handled through Kenyan courts and facilitated by the DPP and other agencies, took four weeks. The ODPP stated the extradition underscores its commitment to international cooperation in criminal justice and ensuring wanted individuals face relevant authorities.
