Kenyans sue over Bayern-Ajax match funding

Six citizens want the High Court to force the government to reveal financial details of the January 5, 2027 football match.

Six Kenyans have filed a petition at the High Court in Nairobi seeking to block the government from using public money for a football match between Bayern Munich and Ajax. The match is scheduled for January 5, 2027, at Talanta Stadium. The petitioners, led by Erick Mankuyu, want the court to compel the government to disclose all financial arrangements for the event.

The petitioners argue that the government has not been transparent about sponsorship deals and potential public financial commitments for the game. President William Ruto announced the match, stating it would be funded through corporate partnerships. However, the petitioners believe assurances are insufficient without full disclosure of government involvement and potential taxpayer exposure.

The lawsuit names the Attorney General, the Sports Cabinet Secretary, and the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary as respondents. The petitioners are asking the court to prevent the release of public funds and the use of public resources, including security and transport, until financial transparency is achieved.

Why it mattersSix Kenyan citizens are concerned about potential undisclosed use of public funds and resources for a football match.
