China donates 304 farm machines to Liberia

Liberia aims to cultivate 50,000 hectares of farmland with the new equipment.

Liberia received 304 agricultural machines from China to boost mechanized farming and expand cultivation. Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah stated the equipment is intended to increase domestic food production and support commercial farming operations. The donation follows engagements between the Liberian and Chinese governments and was officially handed over on October 30.

Minister Nuetah emphasized that farmers must actively use the machinery to achieve increased food production, calling the machines "opportunities for Liberians to engage in farming that will feed the nation." The government plans to partner with the private sector for the management and operation of the machines, rather than direct state control. This approach aims to ensure accessibility for individual farmers and investors while maintaining operational status.

The government's immediate goal is to develop 50,000 hectares of agricultural land. Nuetah noted that successful operation requires resources for fuel, maintenance, and skilled operators, stating, "The machine itself will not do the work." He urged farmers in beneficiary counties to utilize the services, warning that the investment's impact depends on farmer demand and utilization.

Why it mattersLiberian farmers and private investors will gain access to new machinery to expand agricultural operations and increase food production.
