Liberia explores bamboo for eco-prosperity

Liberian experts suggest adapting China's bamboo model to boost local economies and manage natural resources.

Liberian media representatives visited Anji County, China, to observe how bamboo processing, conservation, and rural tourism have transformed the local economy. This visit aims to inform Liberia's approach to managing its forests, wetlands, and agricultural landscapes for employment and community benefit.

Researchers Forkpah Pewee and Dr. Anthony Saah Tengbh believe elements of Anji's model can work in Liberia if adapted to local conditions and supported by practical investments. China's policy, launched after President Xi Xiapin's 2020 UN speech, promotes bamboo as a biodegradable substitute for plastic to combat climate change and pollution.

Liberia, with its extensive natural resources, could potentially turn conservation into a foundation for prosperity. However, successful implementation will depend on financing, infrastructure, technical capacity, environmental enforcement, and community ownership, according to the report.

Why it mattersLiberia's environmental future and economic development could be enhanced by adopting sustainable practices observed in China.
