Liberia's NaFAA secures US$325,000 FAO grant

The funds will support a new fish sales hub in Congo Town, Monrovia, with a cooling room and training.

The National Fisheries & Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) in Liberia has received a US$325,000 grant from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The grant, under the Technical Cooperation Programme, will fund the construction of an improved Fish Sales Hub in Congo Town, Monrovia.

The planned facility will include a 20-tonne cooling room, waste management systems, specialized delivery motorbikes, and smart-energy features. It will also provide training for fishmongers and include a small seafood grill. The initiative aims to improve market access for local fish producers and reduce post-harvest losses.

The grant will also assist the University of Liberia's Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences in developing a Small-Scale Fisheries Guideline, curriculum, and training materials. The Fish Sales Hub is intended to operate as a Public–Private Partnership.

Why it mattersLiberian artisanal fisherfolk, aquaculture farmers, and inland fisheries producers will benefit from strengthened market access and reduced post-harvest losses.
