Liberia Water Justice Forum launched to demand safe water access

A new advocacy group calls on the Liberian government to ensure equitable and affordable provision of safe drinking water for all citizens.

A new water advocacy group, the Liberia Water Justice Forum, was launched in Brewerville, outside Monrovia. The Forum, a collaboration between Church Aid International (CAI), the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in West Africa (FECCIWA), and the Africa Water Justice Network, aims to advocate for access to safe drinking water across Liberia.

CAI Chairman Bishop Kortu Brown stated that the Forum will ask difficult questions about water access and hold leaders accountable. He emphasized that leaders must be prepared to answer these questions to address societal challenges, particularly concerning the provision of accessible and affordable safe drinking water for all Liberians, especially women and children.

The group also called on concession companies operating in Liberia to pay fees for allegedly polluting rivers and creeks. Rev. Christopher Toe, Secretary General of the Liberia Council of Churches, noted that the Forum's launch aligns with pillar six of the Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on clean water and sanitation.

Why it mattersLiberians, particularly women and children, are directly affected by the call for equitable and affordable provision of safe drinking water.
