Econet raises M971 000 for education fund

The annual Econet Golf Day and Expo gala dinner secured funds for vulnerable students in Lesotho.

Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) raised M971 000 for its HigherLife Foundation Lesotho through its annual golf day and gala dinner on Friday at Maseru Mall. The funds were generated from pledges and a matching contribution from ETL. The event also marked the conclusion of the fourth Econet Expo, themed “Think AI, Think Econet”.

ETL Chief Executive Officer Dennis Plaatjies stated that the golf day, established in 2018, supports the foundation's mission to uplift young Basotho through education. The foundation currently assists 141 tertiary students and 114 secondary students. Plaatjies explained that ETL allocates two percent of its annual revenue, approximately M13 million to M15 million, to the foundation, but additional fundraising is necessary due to growing needs.

A total of 84 golfers participated in the tournament. The winning team, comprising Tlotliso Khabo, Tsebo Lerotholi, Matšela Matšela, and Moeketsi Mafereka, finished with 58 points. The event's synergy with the ETL Expo allowed international partners to engage in business and personal networking.
