Lebona Lephema considers new party after RFP leadership bid fails
Business tycoon Lebona Lephema may form a new political party if his attempt to unseat Nthomeng Majara as RFP deputy leader fails.
Disgruntled business tycoon Lebona Lephema is considering forming a new political party and leaving the Revolution for Prosperity (RFP). Lephema, a founding member of the RFP, believes he is entitled to the deputy leadership position currently held by Nthomeng Majara.
Lephema fell out with Prime Minister Sam Matekane after resisting a ministry split and his subsequent redeployment. He was dismissed from Cabinet in May after refusing to accept a new portfolio, citing potential conflicts of interest with the Lesotho National Development Corporation.
If his bid to wrestle the RFP deputy leadership from Majara fails, Lephema plans to form his own party. He has reportedly consulted with disgruntled members of the All Basotho Convention (ABC), including former minister Chalane Phori and ex-secretary-general Lebohang Hlaele, though both deny the claims.
Why it mattersLebona Lephema's potential departure from the ruling RFP and formation of a new party could affect political stability.
