Mafeteng Hospital sued for M2 million over alleged negligence
A patient claims he received no medical attention for seven days after a stomach operation in December 2024.
Mafeteng Hospital faces a M2 million lawsuit for alleged medical negligence after a patient claimed a botched surgery left faecal matter leaking into his body. Teboho Rammusi alleges he received no medical attention for seven days following surgery for a stab wound in December 2024 before being transferred to Tšepong Hospital and later Bloemfontein, South Africa. He is suing the Ministry of Health, its Principal Secretary Matšoanelo Monyobi, Minister Mamokete Ntšekhe, the hospital's Medical Superintendent, and the Attorney General.
In court papers, Rammusi accuses Mafeteng Hospital of failing to provide adequate care and qualified practitioners, stating that tubes on his body showed faeces leaking. Doctors at Tšepong Hospital reportedly discovered faecal matter had spilled into his abdominal cavity through punctured intestines. Rammusi claims this negligence resulted in additional medical expenses, a severe lung infection, pain, and suffering.
The lawsuit alleges the hospital's medical superintendent agreed to perform surgery with reasonable professional skill and care but failed to ensure suitably qualified practitioners were available. Rammusi claims the government is liable as Mafeteng Hospital is state-owned and its officers were acting within their employment scope.
