Libya shapes national blue economy strategy
A workshop in Benghazi reviewed findings and explored priorities for sustainable economic growth along the coast.
National institutions, universities, businesses, and civil society met in Benghazi on October 18 to help shape Libya’s first National Blue Economy Strategy. The workshop, co-organized by UNDP Libya and the National Blue Economy Committee, aimed to unlock the potential of Libya’s coastline for job creation and sustainable economic growth.
Discussions covered seven pillars, including water resources and wastewater management, emphasizing economic diversification, employment, environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and climate resilience. The United Nations Development Programme reported that the workshop outcomes will inform the draft strategy.
The strategy is being developed with support from the Government of Italy, with national partners working towards its adoption in early 2027. The UNDP stated that Libya’s coastline offers opportunities to strengthen coastal livelihoods and support sustainable economic growth while protecting marine ecosystems.
Why it mattersLibyans can expect new jobs and economic growth opportunities along the coast through the development of a national blue economy strategy.
