Moroccan lawmakers question 2027 budget's reach
MPs debate MAD 400 billion investment plan's impact on poorer regions and public services.
Moroccan lawmakers questioned Thursday whether the government’s MAD 400 billion public investment programme could reach regions left behind by economic growth. The House of Representatives’ Finance and Economic Development Committee debated the 2027 Finance Bill’s ability to deliver improvements in public services, employment, and household purchasing power.
Aziz Lebbar, a PAM lawmaker, estimated that approximately 70% of Morocco’s investment and economic activity was concentrated along the Tangier–Rabat–Casablanca corridor, while other regions shared the remaining 30%. He argued that regional investment centres should process applications within 15 to 21 days and that domestic manufacturers should receive stronger incentives to compete with imports.
Istiqlal MP Salma Al Alami questioned the government’s ability to recruit foreign doctors without addressing the conditions driving Moroccan medical graduates abroad. She noted that 580 foreign doctors were working in the country in June 2025, but recruiting more would not necessarily solve shortages in rural and underserved areas.
Why it mattersMoroccan citizens in less developed regions and those relying on public services may not benefit from the proposed MAD 400 billion investment.
