Moroccan MPs question 2027 finance bill details
Lawmakers raise concerns over social aid, student grants, and electricity bill exemptions.
Moroccan MPs debated the 2027 Finance Bill on Thursday, with specific concerns raised about social aid and student grants. The House of Representatives’ Finance and Economic Development Committee heard calls to review eligibility criteria for financial support and ensure fairer public investment distribution.
PAM MP Imane Lamaoui highlighted limited university options in Ouarzazate, forcing students to incur extra costs. She welcomed a plan to increase grant recipients to 430,000 but argued that current income-based criteria exclude many needy students. RNI’s Taoufik Kamil questioned the government’s economic policy, noting that food prices have risen 29% since 2017, and criticized electricity bill exemptions that may miss poorer households.
Kamil also pointed out that despite increased health budgets, the sector’s problems persist. MPs stressed that student grants are an investment in Morocco’s future, warning that dropouts mean the country loses potential skilled workers. The debate also touched on advanced regionalization and the need for clear targets in human capital investment.
