Morocco sees UN Sahara file closure after MINURSO mandate failure

Government spokesperson Samir Belfqih stated that Russia's veto of a UN resolution marks a new phase in the dispute.

Morocco's government declared Saturday that the UN's failure to renew MINURSO's mandate is a significant step toward closing the Sahara dispute at the United Nations. This development followed Russia's veto of a US-backed Security Council resolution.

Government spokesperson Samir Belfqih said the outcome reflects growing international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and its autonomy initiative. He stated that the Royal Cabinet’s statement signals a new phase in the dispute, building on diplomatic momentum under King Mohammed VI.

Belfqih described MINURSO's 35-year presence as part of an outdated international framework, noting the diplomatic environment has changed since the mission's 1991 establishment. He reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to the ceasefire and continued development in the southern provinces.

Why it mattersThe Moroccan government views the UN's failure to renew MINURSO's mandate as a positive development for its position on the Sahara dispute.
